What I’m working on in June…

My sewjo is back! I’ve had a lot of long, uninterrupted sewing days lately - thank you random virus I had last week - but still have nothing completely finished to show. So here’s some in-progress snapshots of my current projects.

I’m finally almost done with the giant paper pieced quilt top. It has been a very long task, that is depressingly void of any color, but it looks amazing. I just have the last row of flying geese to add on and then it will be off to the longarmer!

The quilt is gonna finish at 100” x 100” and I’ve decided there is absolutely no way I want to wrestle it through my machine. Even just adding the borders can be difficult because I have to have so much fabric all bunched up together.

Finding a backing my mom and I like has been a real challenge. We’ve decided we want a dark, textured green. But now we have to find an option that we can either buy 9 yards (!!!) of, or comes in a extra wide format. Hopefully something comes up soon!

I finally decided to cut into my Kona color swatches to find a green that would work as the quilt backing. Unfortunately, my mom did not like any of the Kona greens. But I really enjoyed going through all of the beautiful shades and cutting them apart. I can’t wait ‘till when I get to use the cards to make a color scheme for a quilt!

I’ve also pulled out a pair of jeans to fix, I threw them in my pile two years ago when I realized they had several holes. It’s just taken me this long to buy matching thread and actually get around to mending them. The image on the right shows the holes that have appeared in a lot of stress-prone areas on the jeans. The jeans are made to stretch some so there are elastic synthetic fiber woven across the denim. The denim has ripped leaving sections where, when the pants are worn, you can see through through the areas that just have the clear plastic fibers.

My method for fixed has been to fuse a small piece of SF101 to the back of each rip/hole. Then, I take matching thread and make (many) tiny stitches all across the weakened area. This gives me a very strong mend that is also nearly invisible. The image on the left is a finished mend.

However, the process is very time consuming and tedious because I’m just making hundred of tiny, tiny stitches. Thankfully, I’m halfway through the pants and am motivated by the desire to finally wear the jeans again after two years!

This isn’t necessarily a project-in-progress, but I thought it was really awesome and wanted to share. A historic theater in my town recently hosted “Hooked on Movies” on a Sunday afternoon. They played the Winona Ryder Little Women and left some of the lights on in the theater so people could knit, crochet, or sew. Not many people showed up, but my group and I had an awesome time. I always love seeing other people enjoy creating as much as I do!

Finally, I’ve been making lots of bookmarks and keychains to give as gifts. It’s been fun choosing a wide variety of fun prints and using up scraps. My stash is starting to overflow the designated bins… which has got me thinking… its really time for a scrap quilt. Stay tuned to see what I come up with!
