In Which I Rapidly Crochet Something Purple

I’ve been pinning bandana patterns for some time now… yet not really expecting to ever work up the nerve to actually wear one. Well, I threw all hesitation out the window and forced myself to wear one… mostly because I had just made it.

Our family went to an event at a local lavender farm, and earlier that afternoon a particular skein of lavender colored yarn had caught my eye. I bought it a few months ago at Joann’s (which, by the way, I am already missing. Our local one just closed last week) with no particular project in mind. I just loved the color, almost like a lilac but slightly more blue and less pink. Normally I steer miles away from anything even remotely purple, but this shade feels modern and fresh.

So, there I was, just a few hours before we left for the lavender farm wanting to crochet a purple bandana (gasp!!). Who am I?!?! Purple! And a bandana!

I found a free floral bandana pattern on YouTube that I liked and immediately began. The pattern is easy to work up and I love that the different blocks create a secondary floral pattern when you attach them. I spent the entire afternoon crocheting as quick as is possible for me. And when I got in the car to leave that evening I still had to do the top edge and weave in all the ends. I think I may have set a record time for weaving in 22 different tails.

And then, five minutes before we pulled into the parking lot, I tried to put the bandana on. Hmm. Not sure I love it. But I made myself wear it because I did not want my afternoon to be spent for nothing. And by the end of the night I decided that I previously was wary of bandanas because they are unique, funky, and stand out. However, there is nothing wrong with wearing something that is unique. As someone who thrifts, crochets, and sews, I need to lean into the unique and the funky. It is ok to stand out and show off something you made.

So who knows, maybe I will wear a bandana sometime again.
